MASRIERA MANOVENS, Francisco (Barcelona, 1842 - 1902); TORNÉ, José (Barcelona, late 19th century – early 20th century) “Janvier”, 1886. Engraving. Measurements: 44.8 x 31 cm. Engraving made by José Torné after a painting by Francisco Masriera, representing an elegant lady dressed in a coat, fur muff and hat, against a landscape background. At the bottom: “Francisco Masriera pix. / José Torné sculp.”; bottom: “JANVIER” (“January”). This engraving, of which a copy is preserved in the National Chalcography, was made for publication in the magazine "L'Art". José Torné was an engraver active in the city of Barcelona between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. He worked both on reproduction engraving, for publications such as "L'Art" or "La Ilustración", and on original engraving for bibliophile editions, doing work for publishers such as Miquel-Rius, Librería de los Bibliofilos Españoles and others. It is currently represented in the National Chalcography, as well as in various private collections. Here Torné makes with great delicacy and fidelity an engraved copy of a painting by Francisco Masriera, a prominent portraitist and orientalist painter who won awards at official exhibitions such as the Paris Universals of 1867, 1878 and 1889.
