Oswaldo Guayasamín (1919/07/06 - 1999/03/10) was an Ecuadorian painter and sculptor, and one of the most important Latin American artists of the 20th century. His works have been exhibited in the best galleries in the world: Venezuela, France, Mexico, Cuba, Italy, Spain, USA, Brazil, Colombia, Soviet Union, China, among others. He maintained a great friendship with the Cuban president Fidel Castro and with the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez. In 1976 he created the Guayasamín Foundation in Quito, to which he donated his work and his art collections. In 1978 he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Spain, and a year later he became an honorary member of the Italian Academy of Arts. In 1982, a 120-meter mural painted by him was inaugurated at the Barajas Airport in Madrid. In 1984, he portrayed King Juan Carlos I and Fidel Castro for the third time, two of the more than three thousand portraits he made. He was the author of the main mural of the permanent headquarters of the Latin American Parliament, which was inaugurated in September 1992. That year he received the "Eugenio Espejo" award, the main cultural award granted by the Ecuadorian Government. In January 1993, he left for Cuba to inaugurate his house-museum in Havana.
