Tàpies se inicia en el arte durante la larga convalecencia . Progresivamente se dedicará con mayor intensidad al dibujo y a la pintura, y finalmente deja sus estudios de Derecho para dedicarse por completo al arte. Cofundador de “Dau al Set” en 1948, empieza a exponer en los Salones de Octubre de Barcelona, así como en el Salón de los Once celebrado en Madrid en 1949. Tras realizar su primera muestra individual en las Galerías Layetanas, viaja a París en 1950, becado por el Instituto Francés.
