  • Portrait of a woman. From Sucre

Born into an aristocratic family deeply connected to the Catalan arts and literature scene, Josep M. de Sucre began frequenting the intellectual cafés of Barcelona from a young age—such as Quatre Gats in the city center or Cafè Tost (later Cafè Monumental) in the Vila de Gràcia—where he met illustrious figures like Pau Casals, Eugeni d’Ors, and Pablo Picasso. These influences shaped his career, making him a prominent figure for his multifaceted Artwork in the cultural world. A poet, critic, and driving force behind major cultural events in Barcelona, such as the Saló d’Octubre, Josep M.ª de Sucre began his artistic career in the late 1920s with a solo exhibition at the Sala Dalmau. Characterized by expressionist and primitive currents, Sucre's pictorial Artwork is considered the transition from modernism to the avant-garde, where faces with expressions of a disturbing depth seem to enclose a world in which marginality leads us to a constant questioning.
