Khmer Art (Cambodia): In Cambodian art, statues of apsaras or divine figures may also have their hands in a position of blessing or protection. This gesture is common in the religious art of the Khmer Empire (9th-13th centuries). Meaning of the Gesture Abhaya Mudra: If the hands are open with the palms facing forward, this gesture is often called Abhaya Mudra, which means "gesture of the absence of fear" or "protection." It is common in figures of Buddha, as well as in some representations of Hindu gods and goddesses. It represents divine protection, peace, and calm. Devotional Context: This gesture is used to convey blessings and tranquility to devotees. Statues with this position are often placed on altars to invoke protection or spiritual tranquility.
