Under an atmosphere charged with humid light and broken reflections, It Rains on Wet Ground, San Sebastián captures the vibrant essence of the city when the asphalt becomes a mirror and life moves forward amidst umbrellas, headlights, and hurried footsteps. The urban scene is not described, but suggested: barely defined figures cross a pedestrian crossing that dissolves into flashes of whites, ochres, and deep blacks, while the architecture emerges diffusely from mists of pigment.
In this Artwork, Espigares consolidates his new technique, a personal evolution where the brushstroke is fragmented and overlapped, creating layers of movement, as if the rain were falling not only on the city, but also on the painting itself. The gesture is free, almost musical, yet sustained by a solid compositional structure that guides the eye toward the luminous heart of the painting.
His language engages with the tradition of the great masters of urban atmosphere, such as Turner, for his treatment of light and the dissolution of forms, or Whistler, in the nocturnal poetry of his scenes. At the same time, it connects with the expressive power of contemporaries or certain echoes of modern urban Impressionism, where the city is emotion before architecture. However, Espigares does not imitate: he reinterprets from his own unique perspective, taking the urban landscape to a more emotional and abstract realm.
The artist's beginnings date back to his childhood, when drawing was already a natural part of his way of seeing the world. His first real contact with a brush was not on a canvas, but on a ceramic vessel, at the Artworkshop of the sculptor and painter Miguel Ruiz, in Jun (Granada). That experience marked the origin of a direct relationship with matter, surface, and gesture. A self-taught artist by vocation, his career has grown through exhibitions, commissions across Europe, and awards in painting, consolidating a unique style in which watercolor, acrylic, and urban landscapes intertwine as fundamental axes.
Each of Espigares' Artworks is the result of a constant exploration of the balance between control and improvisation, construction and chance, memory and the present.
