This lithograph is part of a series of similar lithographs that Joan Miró created in 1975 and which were published by the Parisian studio Mourlot. This Artwork reveals a true delicacy on Miró's part. Here the artist is more restrained in his usual symbolic repertoire. Hollow black lines and bold blocks of color trace slender, conical forms. The fineness of the pencil grain is striking. With utter simplicity, Miró composes an architecture of multiple curves. This composition takes center stage on the panel, defining the void around it. Between the abstract and the figurative, we discern the silhouette of an animal, which the artist is careful not to clearly identify. This freedom of interpretation leads us to recognize a donkey, one of Miró's favorite animals. With its head bowed, it appears sometimes sad, sometimes dreamy.

    Alberto Rafols-Casamada (Barcelona, 1923 – 2009), was a poet and painter. Rafols-Casamada began his studies in architecture but abandoned them to dedicate himself fully to the visual arts, thanks to the support of his father, Albert Ràfols i Cullerés. The painter was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts by the Ministry of Culture in 1980, the National Prize for Visual Arts of Catalonia in 2003 and was an honorary academic of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
