Ships and vessels have been depicted in art since ancient times, but the navy only began to become a genre, with specialized artists, towards the end of the Middle Ages. Sparsely represented in the Renaissance, pure seascapes would not arrive until later. Thus, they stood out in 17th century Dutch painting, as a reflection of the importance of foreign trade and the naval power of that republic, an importance that British painting would later inherit for the same concept.
