MODEST SALA SEBASTIÀ, painter and writer, who signs his pictorial works as “walas”, was born in Badalona, a coastal city next to Barcelona, in 1951. He has dedicated himself to painting since he was 18 years old, influenced by family tradition, in a self-taught way. From a very young age he lives in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. It is a constantly evolving “truth seeker”. Where we come from? Where are we going? What, after death? All his life he has been evolving in his perceptions of the reality that surrounds us. This has been reflected in his paintings. His initial figurative style evolved into abstract expressionist painting. At present in his work the vital skepticism that absorbs him is captured. Just shapes and color. Sensations and emotions. Nothing to interpret, just feel and perceive. Just observe without thinking. Painting at the service of evocation. The spark to ignite and ignite. Mobilize all the energy that each individual carries within, which remains idle, without fruit. The technique he uses to create his works is complex. The basis of color are oil pigments. Most of his works have an essential material component, which gives his works a characteristic texture. It manufactures its own thinners and binders that it mixes with sand and other materials. He has one of his workshops in Begur, a town on the Catalan coast, where he spends long periods of time. The Empordà, a region of Catalonia, and the Costa Brava are one of its sources of spiritual inspiration. His ideas about life, nature and the universe can be discussed, but in no case can they be branded as trivial, without interest. DEMONIACAL, is a book written by the painter that points in an almost schematic way to the spinal cord of his current thinking and concerns, in constant evolution, that inspire and condition all his painting. They are free, bloody, unprejudiced, sincere and inconclusive thoughts.
