Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) - Hélène chez Archimède

Attention! Start session for bidding for this lot.

Wood engraving, Woodcut on cream Marais paper for Vollard's projected edition of "Hélène chez Archimède" by André Suarès, illustrated with wood engravings by Georges Aubert (1886-1961) after drawings by Pablo Picasso. Vollard postponed this edition, but not before publishing this single printing separately in the specialized typographic magazine Arts et Métiers Graphiques in 1931. This was a small commercial publication with only a few hundred copies. Vollard finally published the book almost 25 years later in an edition of 240 copies of the Nouveau Cercle Parisien du Livre. Therefore, this engraving is somewhat rare; It is also the most attractive of Picasso's Cubist illustrations for this Artwork, and is reproduced on page 96 of Nicholas Rauch, Les Peintres et le Livre. Catalogs raisonnés: References: Rauch 80; Johnson, Vollard, 1931. Delivered with mat from art gallery.
