Josep Coll (August 18, 1870, in Montferrer or Perpignan – April 26, 1934, in Perpignan), known by his stage name Han Coll, was an artist, sculptor, and painter from the Vallespir region. The son of a village blacksmith, Coll was a self-taught artist. He served as a drawing teacher at Els Banys d'Arles and at the "Institution catholique Saint Louis de Gonzague" in Perpignan, continuing his teaching until his death. In 1923, he was appointed "Official of Public Instruction." He participated in the revitalization of Rosselló's cultural scene alongside Albert Bausil, with whom he collaborated on plays written and directed by the latter. He also participated in other amateur performances and is the author of the comedy "Un misunderstood. Comédie en un acte." He created medallions, statuettes, and sculptures, as well as ephemeral constructions such as figures and floats for Carnival. His notable Artworks include the bust of Albert Saisset "Oun tal" (installed in 1923 in the Place Terrús in Perpignan), the bust of Léon Dieudé (located in the Sant Martí cemetery in Perpignan), and several monuments to those who fell in the First World War. He also devoted himself to painting, cultivating various disciplines such as design, watercolor, landscape painting, and portraits. He painted several decorative panels for the apartment of Baron Després. At the 1934 Toulouse Floral Games, he was awarded the triennial "Clement de Lacroix-Barréra" prize, worth 1,000 francs, for his entire body of Artwork. The award document added: "To give a complete picture of Han Coll, it should be added that he is also a poet, journalist, art professor, painter, and actor when necessary, and that he serves Catalan tradition in every way, with an equally noble, sincere, and strong talent." Currently, the artist has been described as "shy, sickly, fundamentally honest and upright, faithful in friendship and in his most intimate convictions."
