Subasta Real. Short Biography of Jorge Omeñaca

Jorge Omeñaca is a photographer specializing in artistic photography. His work is distinguished by the sale of limited series Fine Art printed photographs, available in both online and physical galleries. Additionally, he works on personalized commissions, using his own method that combines photography with narrative. In recent years, he has exhibited in renowned art galleries in Madrid, Marbella, and Milan.

Jorge Omeñaca's style is characterized by his preference for "detail" photography, especially in nature, which he edits in a distinctive way to give it a pictorial look. His images are on a delicate line between photography and painting, fusing figurative and abstract elements. In addition to seeking an attractive aesthetic, his photographs present relevant symbols and metaphors.

In addition to his work in artistic photography, Jorge Omeñaca is also involved in essay photography projects, which he has materialized in exhibitions and photo-books. Some of his previous projects include "De Memoris" (2022) and "Retuerta" (2018), the latter based on his eponymous novel, which he also authored. He is currently working on two new projects in this genre: "Dermis", a photo-book that combines poetry and abstract photography, and "Gametecture", a documentary photography project about urban architectural "gamification".

Jorge Omeñaca has acquired his training over more than a decade at various photography schools such as Spectrum (Zaragoza), Blanco y Negro, Photo Love, and La Máquina (Madrid). He has also studied classical drawing and painting at the Cañada Academy (Zaragoza), as well as creative writing at the School of Writers and Fuentetaja (Madrid). He has been a permanent resident of Madrid since 2009. This week we interviewed him at Subasta Real to get to know his work better.

SR How would you describe your work?

Jorge Omeñaca. I would define my work as pictorial photography. I start with photography, but through digital treatments I subject the image to a series of edits that create effects and textures that are reminiscent of painting. The result is something that is between both artistic genres.

SR What work have you most enjoyed doing? What is your favorite work?

JO. I don't have a favorite piece, although of the works I am presenting here, I have a predilection for the series I title Exigua Natura, such as the works The sea, the sea, or Neuronal.

SR What are you passionate about?

JO. Since I was little I have practiced painting, artistic photography, and creative writing with assiduity. In some of my projects, I try to combine these genres. For example, a photo-book that incorporates my own texts, or a photographic series inspired by painting. This hybridization of genres is what I most enjoy practicing and exploring as an artist.

SR What would be the professional commission you would most like to do?

JO. I work on commission regularly. I create work for clients who want to "tell a story" through the image. Their story. I research who they are, their personal biography, what other people are important in their lives, and with that information, I try to bring what they represent to the image. These projects give me great personal satisfaction. In that sense, any of these projects that have a very personal and emotional component, I am passionate about.

SR Do you think that as an artist you have an extra responsibility that no one talks about?

I have always thought that an artist is someone capable of seeing what others do not, decoding that reality and then bringing it to a language (photographic, cinematographic, pictorial) so that others can see and understand it. Or reflect on it.

SR What projects are you currently working on?

JO. A photo-book in which I combine poetry with photography, in collaboration with the artist Mena Sambiasi. And an essay photography project about urban architectural gamification. This is for the longer-term projects. I combine these projects with my usual artistic activity.
